Leesa vs Puffy: Which One Should You Buy?

We bought and tested both mattresses to help you decide.

Unsure of which mattress to get between the Leesa and Puffy?

Luckily for you, we bought and tested each brand’s best-selling mattress to help you decide which mattress is, in our opinion, a better investment.

According to various studies, we spend at least a third of our lives sleeping. Now, if we say that the average person lives to 75 years, that’s around 25 years of our lives that we spend asleep.

So it makes complete sense to invest in a top-notch comfortable and supportive mattress that will give you the best quality of sleep for many years to come!

Leesa vs Puffy: Overview

In this review, we’re taking a closer look at two of the most popular and newer mattress brands in the industry – Puffy and Leesa. Both of these companies are quite new to the market, but their products have already received a considerable amount of praise from thousands of customers.

We decided to do an in-depth review to see how they compare in terms of comfort, composition, and of course value for your hard-earned money.

So if you’re stuck deciding between the Puffy and the Leesa mattress, this review and comparison is definitely for you.

Leesa vs Puffy: Construction

Leesa

The Leesa Original Mattress consists of the following 3 layers:

1) Avena Foam – Developed as an alternative synthetic material to latex, Avena foam has been built to have the same properties. Latex can be expensive to produce but it does offer excellent support and responsiveness. It’s also great at staying at a cool and comfortable temperature throughout the night.

Avena foam may not offer the exact same level of support and response as natural latex, but it certainly comes close. The one problem with latex is how long it lasts. It’s not the most durable material out there as it tends to degrade relatively quickly, especially when compared to other materials commonly used within mattresses.

One of the key elements that customers look for in a mattress is durability, and the Leesa team have addressed this with the Avena foam. It has been developed to last for years. In fact, it can even be compared to the long-lasting memory foam in terms of its durability.

For the manufacturer, the major benefit of Avena foam over latex is that it costs a lot less to produce. This means that they can set a more affordable price for customers. The cheaper production does include more chemicals though, which makes it less eco-friendly than natural latex.

One of the interesting things about this Leesa layer is that it is shaped almost like the underside of an egg carton. There are also plenty of holes throughout for ventilation purposes. This prevents too much hot air from getting trapped within.

Now, the design of this layer isn’t one that only the Leesa brand uses. But is it still highly effective for creating a cool and comfortable sleeping surface.

2) Memory Foam – The next layer is made of regular memory foam. It doesn’t include any advanced technology or other materials so there’s not much we can say about it.  However, it is still great at contouring to your body and doesn’t take too long to react to body heat and adapt to your shape. The purpose of this layer is simply to provide a high level of support and contouring that memory foam is famous for.

3) High-Density Support Foam – Finally, the Leesa mattress has a foam base layer for foundational support. It’s made of a high-density foam material and its sole purpose is to support the above layers.

Puffy

Now, let’s take a closer look at the Puffy mattress. The Puffy is also constructed of 3 layers, which is largely due to the multiple benefits of their Cooling Cloud memory foam:

1) Cooling Cloud Foam – Puffy’s Cooling Cloud foam is a patent-pending material that you’ll only find in a Puffy mattress. The brand has worked hard to develop Cooling Cloud as a competitor to the standard memory foam used by many other mattress manufacturers.

So, what are some of the benefits of Cooling Cloud Foam, over the standard memory foam?

The primary advantage that we’ve found is that Cooling Cloud is more cooling due to its structure – the material has the advantage of being one of the coolest foams in the industry. Puffy’s Cooling Cloud Memory foam disperses heat away from your body using convection and conduction allowing for more effective airflow.

Puffy’s Gel Infused Foam increases airflow around 8x more than standard foam mattresses that you can purchase online, leaving you cool, comfortable and well rested.

Another benefit of the Cooling Cloud material is the speed at which it contours to your body shape. Regular memory foam requires body heat to activate its cells and contouring ability. Cooling Cloud is quicker to respond due to the lack of cells.

Yes, the difference in time is almost insignificant, but we thought its still worth mentioning, especially if you’d like your mattress to contour instantly, rather than taking a little bit of time to warm up.

2) Climate Adaptive Regulation Foam – The secret of Puffy’s mattress reputation is its consistency. Puffy mattresses incorporate advanced temperature & humidity-resistant materials, such as their Climate Adaptive Regulation Foam layer, that combat climate fluctuations which can disrupt a comfortable night’s sleep.

3) Firm Core Support Foam – The Puffy Mattress is not only comfortable, but it’s also strong and durable. Puffy’s 6″ Firm Support Layer and its Insta-Firm Technology provides noticeably better responsiveness and better support than many standard mattresses.

Body Adapting Dual Cloud Layer (Exclusive to Puffy Lux)  – This layer is only built into Puffy Lux products and comes with all of the benefits of the regular Puffy mattress, plus two extra inches of memory foam – this means all of the features of the regular Puffy are technically doubled for an incredible night’s sleep.

Leesa vs Puffy: Comfort & Support

When shopping for a new mattress, most people will agree that comfort and support is of the utmost importance. This makes sense because if you’ll be spending 8 hours a day in bed – the mattress better be comfortable and supportive.

Both Leesa and Puffy are two very comfortable mattresses, however, one of them feels a little more comfortable and provides slightly better cooling throughout the night.

During our tests we came to the conclusion that Puffy is a little more comfortable than Lessa. Its hard to pinpoint exactly where the difference is, but Puffy just feels a little better and more comfortable.

Another thing that caught our eye was that Puffy provided a more cool sleeping surface than Leesa. This probably has something to do with Puffy’s Cooling Cloud Foam layer.

Leesa vs Puffy: Cooling

The Avena foam layer in the Leesa mattress is key to providing a comfortably cool surface for sleepers. This is because it is carefully designed for great and easy ventilation so hot air isn’t trapped inside. You won’t experience any uncomfortable hot patches with the Leesa.

However, the Puffy has the edge in this department, thanks to its advanced cooling system.

Puffy’s Cooling Cloud material ensures a well regulated temperature through the night. It never gets too cold or too hot, and there are very few mattresses that manage to achieve this comfortable balance.

Leesa vs Puffy: Edge Support

Next, we compare the level of edge support from both mattresses. But first things first, what does edge support even mean?

Simply put, a mattress with great edge support will make you feel supported even when you’re sitting (or laying) near the edge. It won’t just be supportive of your body weight when you’re in the center. The edges will be sturdy and solid, which will not only have a positive impact on your comfort levels, but also on the durability of the mattress.

In terms of the edge support of Leesa and Puffy, we found that both were quite strong in this regard. It was possible to sit on and lie on any corner of the mattress without feeling unsupported or unstable near the edges.

Leesa vs Puffy: Sleep Trial and Warranty

The Puffy mattress and the Leesa mattress can both be bought online.

Now, while this means that online buyers cannot physically try out the mattresses before they purchase, both brands have compensated for this by offering generous trial periods. Within these periods, customers can test out their new mattress in the comfort of their own home, and return them for free if they didn’t like it for any reason. Both Puffy and Leesa also offer warranties in case of any issues.

Puffy has a slight edge over the Leesa when it comes to the sleep trial period – one day, to be exact! With the Puffy mattress, you get 101 days to try out your new mattress and decide whether you want to keep it.

Puffy’s warranty package is also exceptional, with a LIFETIME warranty for every Puffy mattress sold. This is an incredibly good offer in the mattress world, and shows the confidence that the Puffy team has in the quality of their product. They’ve clearly designed and constructed Puffy to last for a very, very long time.

The Leesa mattress comes with a 100 day trial period, which is on par with Puffy’s 101 day trial period.

However, where Leesa loses out is the length of their warranty.

Their 10-year warranty pales in comparison with the Puffy’s LIFETIME warranty. This means that any problems you may encounter after the first 10 years of owning your Leesa mattress will be entirely your own to deal with and pay for.

Leesa vs Puffy: Price

Let’s get to one of the most important elements that buyers factor in when mattress shopping – the price.

Puffy offers two different mattress models. The Puffy mattress is available for $850 for a queen size, while a queen Puffy Lux is $1,495. You can get all sizes from Twin to Cal King.

Puffy is currently offering $300 OFF any mattress, and here’s a price for each Puffy mattress with a $300 discount applied. Please note that Puffy Lux will be a little more expensive than Puffy, due to having an additional Body Adapting Dual Cloud Layer.

The Leesa Original Mattress costs $999 for a queen size. This includes free shipping, a 10 year warranty and a 100-nights sleep trial period. You can also get all sizes from Twin to Cal King.

When it comes to prices, both the Puffy and the Leesa are both reasonably priced and offer good value for the money.

Leesa vs Puffy: Weight and Size

While the weight of your mattress may not be something you really care about, it is definitely worth considering if you’re planning to unpack and install the mattress yourself, or are planning to move soon.

The Puffy is a little lighter than Leesa, and will be a little easier to move around, etc. The queen Leesa original mattress weighs around 71 pounds, while the queen Puffy mattress weighs around 69 pounds.

During our tests, we also noticed that a Queen Puffy mattress was slightly longer than a Queen Leesa mattress as you can see on the image above.

Leesa vs Puffy: Our Pick

While Leesa and Puffy are both great and reasonably-priced mattresses, after testing and comparing the different features of both mattresses, we came to the conclusion that the Puffy mattress wins over the Leesa.

In our opinion, Puffy has a slight edge over Leesa in the comfort and cooping departments.

Not only does Puffy feel a little more comfortable – it also provides better cooling due to its Cooling Cloud foam, one of the most innovative materials you can find in a mattress. Puffy’s advanced cooling system offers people the perfect temperature to sleep on which is a very hard thing to do.

Puffy also comes with a LIFETIME warranty vs. Leesa’s more limited 10-year warranty.

Puffy’s generous warranty package means that the Puffy team will help you deal with any issues you’ll ever face.

The only way you’d ever need to get a mattress replacement is if you accidentally damage it yourself. Think of the Puffy as the ultimate ‘forever’ purchase.

In our opinion, this, combined with Puffy’s Cooling Cloud material and the excellent value it provides, ultimately make it a more worthy investment than the Leesa.

And if that’s not enough, the number of positive reviews Puffy mattresses have — over 5,000 5-star reviews and counting — should be enough to convince any cautious buyer.
