Casper or Puffy? We Bought & Tested Both Mattresses to Help You Decide

Unsure of which mattress to get between the Casper and Puffy?

Luckily for you, we bought and tested each brand’s best-selling mattress to help you decide which mattress is, in our opinion, a better investment.

According to various studies, we spend at least a third of our lives sleeping. Now, if we say that the average person lives to 75 years, that’s around 25 years of our lives that we spend asleep.

So it makes complete sense to invest in a top-notch comfortable and supportive mattress that will give you the best quality of sleep for many years to come!

Information gathered as of 12/18/2019 from manufacturers websites and BBB.org

Casper vs Puffy: Overview

In recent years, we’ve been introduced to a number of high-quality mattresses with advanced technology and unique features. The Puffy Mattress, which was recently featured on The Ellen DeGeneres Show show, is one such example.

Another good example is of course the Casper mattress. Casper is undoubtedly one of the most well-known mattress brands out there. They made online mattress shopping a lot more mainstream, thanks to their innovative marketing campaigns, and a great user experience.

Both mattress brands appeal to different types of sleepers and accommodate all body sizes. Both are also quite comfortable and are well-priced.

So if you’re stuck deciding between the Puffy and the Casper mattress, this review and comparison is definitely for you.

Casper vs Puffy: Construction

Casper

The Casper mattress is composed of four different layers of foams:

1) Latex Alternative Foam – The first layer is one and a half inches of latex alternative foam. This is a responsive layer that is designed to feel like latex.

2) Memory Foam – Next, you’ve got one and a half inches of memory foam for pressure relief and contouring.

3) Foam Layer – The third layer has been built in as a transition foam layer.

4) Dense Supportive Foam – The top 3 layers sit on another five inches of dense and highly supportive foam. This final base layer is created to provide a strong foundation.

The Casper layers work well together to provide comfort, pressure relief and support.

Puffy

Now, let’s take a closer look at the Puffy mattress. The Puffy is also constructed of 3 layers, which is largely due to the multiple benefits of their Cooling Cloud memory foam:

1) Cooling Cloud Foam – Puffy’s Cooling Cloud foam is a patent-pending material that you’ll only find in a Puffy mattress. The brand has worked hard to develop Cooling Cloud as a competitor to the standard memory foam used by many other mattress manufacturers.

So, what are some of the benefits of Cooling Cloud Foam, over the standard memory foam?

The primary advantage that we’ve found is that Cooling Cloud is more cooling due to its structure – the material has the advantage of being one of the coolest foams in the industry. Puffy’s Cooling Cloud Memory foam disperses heat away from your body using convection and conduction allowing for more effective airflow.

Puffy’s Gel Infused Foam increases airflow around 8x more than standard foam mattresses that you can purchase online, leaving you cool, comfortable and well rested.

Another benefit of the Cooling Cloud material is the speed at which it contours to your body shape. Regular memory foam requires body heat to activate its cells and contouring ability. Cooling Cloud is quicker to respond due to the lack of cells.

Yes, the difference in time is almost insignificant, but we thought its still worth mentioning, especially if you’d like your mattress to contour instantly, rather than taking a little bit of time to warm up.

2) Climate Adaptive Regulation Foam – The secret of Puffy’s mattress reputation is its consistency. Puffy mattresses incorporate advanced temperature & humidity-resistant materials, such as their Climate Adaptive Regulation Foam layer, that combat climate fluctuations which can disrupt a comfortable night’s sleep.

3) Firm Core Support Foam – The Puffy Mattress is not only comfortable, but it’s also strong and durable. Puffy’s 6″ Firm Support Layer and its Insta-Firm Technology provides noticeably better responsiveness and better support than many standard mattresses.

Body Adapting Dual Cloud Layer (Exclusive to Puffy Lux)  – This layer is only built into Puffy Lux products and comes with all of the benefits of the regular Puffy mattress, plus two extra inches of memory foam – this means all of the features of the regular Puffy are technically doubled for an incredible night’s sleep.

Casper vs Puffy: Comfort and Support

For most people, one of the key deciding factors for which mattress to get is the comfort level. Ultimately, everyone wants to get a great night’s sleep. The Casper and Puffy mattresses have similar levels of comfort and support, but they differ slightly in terms of how they actually feel, as well as their cooling properties.

During our tests, we came to the conclusion that Puffy provides better cooling throughout the night, and feels a little more comfortable than Casper.

When lying or moving around on a Casper, it feels like its memory foam sinks in a little too much.

Casper also felt a little more rigid and bouncy than Puffy.

Puffy on the other hand was very comfortable to sleep on, and in our opinion, they got the firmness and comfort levels just right!

Casper vs Puffy: Motion Transfer

Due to the fact that both the Casper and the Puffy mattresses are made entirely of foam, they’re both great choices for couples as they have minimal motion transfer. The layers of foam have been carefully designed to limit vibrations so you won’t get disturbed by any movement from your partner.

So, how did the two compare for us when it comes to motion transfer? Let’s start with the Puffy. Its Cooling Cloud layer, and other foam layers are great at absorbing movements as they have a slow responding quality. We’d go so far as to say that this mattress is pretty much free of motion transfer, making it an ideal choice for those with partners or light sleepers.

The Casper didn’t fare as well as Puffy in this department, although the difference is not that noticeable. As the top layer of the Casper is build to mimic the feel of latex, it is slightly more bouncy. If you’re easily disturbed by movements, we’d recommend the Puffy if you want slightly better motion isolation. Their top Cooling Cloud foam layer is really good at hugging the contours of your body, and thus minimizing motion transfer.

Casper vs Puffy: Edge Support

Ever felt like you’re about to fall off your mattress when you get too close to the edge? This is due to a lack of strong support around the edges, and was a common issue with traditional mattresses.

If you want to make full use of all the space on your mattress, you need to get one with quality edge support. This is especially helpful when you have a partner and you accidentally get pushed right to the edge of the bed… strong edge support often has a lot to do with the type of materials used in the mattress, and how well it’s been constructed.

In terms of the edge support of Casper and Puffy, we found that both were quite strong in this regard. It was possible to sit on and lie on any corner of the mattress without feeling unsupported or unstable near the edges.

Casper vs Puffy: Sleep Trial and Warranty

The Puffy mattress and the Casper mattress both sell most of their mattresses online.

Now, while this means that online buyers cannot physically try out the mattresses before they purchase, both brands have compensated for this by offering generous trial periods. Within these periods, customers can test out their new mattress in the comfort of their own home, and return them for free if they didn’t like it for any reason. Both Puffy and Casper also offer warranties in case of any issues.

Puffy has a slight edge over the Casper when it comes to the sleep trial period – one day, to be exact! With the Puffy mattress, you get 101 days to try out your new mattress and decide whether you want to keep it.

Puffy’s warranty package is also exceptional, with a LIFETIME warranty for every Puffy mattress sold. This is an incredibly good offer in the mattress world, and shows the confidence that the Puffy team has in the quality of their product. They’ve clearly designed and constructed Puffy to last for a very, very long time.

The Casper mattress comes with a 100 day trial period, which is on par with Puffy’s 101 day trial period.

However, where Casper loses out is the length of their warranty.

Their 10-year warranty pales in comparison with the Puffy’s LIFETIME warranty. This means that any problems you may encounter after the first 10 years of owning your Casper mattress will be entirely your own to deal with and pay for.

Casper vs Puffy: Price

Let’s get to one of the most important elements that buyers factor in when mattress shopping – the price.

Puffy offers two different mattress models. The Puffy mattress is available for $850 for a queen size, while a queen Puffy Lux is $1,495. You can get all sizes from Twin to Cal King.

Puffy is currently offering $300 OFF any mattress, and here’s a price for each Puffy mattress with a $300 discount applied. Please note that Puffy Lux will be a little more expensive than Puffy, due to having an additional Body Adapting Dual Cloud Layer.

The Casper Mattress costs $995 for a queen size. This includes free shipping, a 10 year warranty and a 100-nights sleep trial period. You can also get all sizes from Twin to Cal King.

When it comes to prices, both the Puffy and the Casper are both reasonably priced and offer good value for the money, although Puffy is a bit cheaper.

Casper vs Puffy: Weight and Size

While the weight of your mattress may not be something you really care about, it is definitely worth considering if you’re planning to unpack and install the mattress yourself, or are planning to move soon.

The Puffy is a bit lighter than Casper, and will be a little easier to move around, etc. The queen Casper mattress weighs around 85 pounds, while the queen Puffy mattress weighs around 69 pounds.

During our tests, we also noticed that a Queen Puffy mattress was visibly longer than a Queen Casper mattress.

Casper vs Puffy: Our Pick

While Casper and Puffy share many similarities, after testing and comparing the different features of both mattresses, we came to the conclusion that the Puffy mattress wins over the Casper.

In our opinion, the biggest difference is the feel and cooling properties.

Not only does Puffy feel more comfortable – it also provides better cooling throughout the night!

Puffy also comes with a LIFETIME warranty vs. Casper’s more limited 10-year warranty.

Puffy’s generous warranty package means that the Puffy team will help you deal with any issues you’ll ever face.

The only way you’d ever need to get a mattress replacement is if you accidentally damage it yourself. Think of the Puffy as the ultimate ‘forever’ purchase.

In our opinion, this combined with Puffy’s cheaper price and minimal motion transfer, ultimately make it a more worthy investment than the Casper.

And if that’s not enough, the number of positive reviews Puffy mattresses have — over 5,000 5-star reviews and counting — should be enough to convince any cautious buyer.
